The much awaited people’s car from Tata that the world had been waiting for has been launched at the New Delhi Auto Expo. The car has been christened the Nano, and is available to the public at a dealer price of 1 lakh, before local taxes. The Nano is the brainchild of Tata chairman Ratan Tata who was on hand to take the wraps of the car himself.
The car is powered by an all aluminium, 2-cylinder, 624cc MPFi petrol engine that sits just above the rear wheels and produces 33bhp at 5500rpm. The engine is mated to a four speed manual transmission. Tata are also in the process of developing a CVT automatic transmission.
The whole car tips the scales at 580-600 kg, which has helped Tata reach a claimed an overall, combined city and highway driving figure of 20kmpl.
The Nano’s chassis construction is not purely monocoque. Tata used two long members and three cross members to give the chassis some rigidity. Like the Indica, the car used all independent front and rear suspension. The car rides on MRF rubber that is 135/70 at the front and 155/65 at the rear.
While the car does not have creature comforts like air conditioning or power windows, coming variants will have these features.
