Ratan Tata to retire after 1 lakh car launch

India has been waiting since long for Tata’s dream Rs one-lakh car launch.

But the proposed launch on January 10 at auto expo show in New Delhi is going to be special for some other reason also.

The Head of the Tata Group, Ratan Tata would like to retire from active business life after his dream project gets a successful launch.

Tata told a newspaper recently that the launch of the small car would be a best time for him to exit from the business world.

Tata Motors, the giant automobile group of more than Rs three trillion market value, is scheduled to unveil the vehicle, which is popularly called as the "People's Car".

The Cornell-trained architect Ratan Tata helped in designing the car and aimed to attract the middle class to get off their motorbikes and turn into cars.

Marketing the car as the world’s cheapest mass-produced car, Tata recently said that the car would not pollute more than a motorcycle.

However, the rival carmakers are not really persuaded about the safety and emission standards of the car, at that price.

Bilawal Bhutto named chairman of PPP

Three days after former Pakistan premier Benazir Bhutto was assassinated, her son Bilawal has been named the chairman of the Pakistan People's Party.

The decision comes after a high-level meeting of the PPP members in Larkana, where the post funeral services took place for the slain leader.

Bhutto's husband Asif Zardari, Abdul Makhdoom Fahim, deputy leader of PPP and Shah Mehmood Qureshi have been named co-chairmen of the party.

Fahim was widely known as Benazir's right hand man. He led the party in Benazir's absence, from 1999 to October 2007.

A Benazir loyalist, Fahim is the quintessential party man, who never wavered in his loyalties towards his leader in all these years. He was in the same vehicle as the now departed leader, at the time she was assassinated.

Earlier in the day, Bhutto's close aide Sherry Rehman had told NDTV that PPP cannot thrust party leadership on Bilawal.

Rehman had said that Bilawal was keen to complete his studies but that does not rule him out.

Meanwhile, a special memorial service, called the soyem, took place for the slain former Pakistan premier in her ancestral village in Larkana in Sind, on the fourth day after her death.

Family politics

While all eyes are on Bilawal Bhutto, his estranged cousins Fatima and Zulfikar Bhutto junior are slowly building up their political profiles.

The children of Benazir's brother Murtaza have often been publicly critical of Benazir's politics.

However, speaking exclusively to NDTV's Managing Editor Barkha Dutt in Larkana in Pakistan, Fatima Bhutto says she mourned her aunt as a family member but would express her political differences through her writing instead of party politics.

Shemaroo inks $6.6-million satellite deal with Zee

Shemaroo Entertainment Pvt Ltd, one of India’s largest aggregators of movies for broadcast, has entered into a 10-movie deal with Zee TV worth Rs.260 million ($6.6 million) for satellite broadcast.

Zee TV will telecast these movies on its satellite channel over a period of five years from 2008.

The movies include “Dhamaal”, “Dhol”, “Manorama Six Feet Under”, “Mera Pehla Pehla Pyaar”, “Raqueeb”, “Yatra” and “Anuranan” (the Hindi version).

This is said to be one of the costliest ever deals Zee has made with a content provider.

“The deal is worth the cost, considering many of these movies which figure in the deal with Shemaroo will be telecast on television for the first time,” a source in Zee TV told IANS, justifying the staggering cost of the deal for a bouquet of just 10 films.

Shemaroo, which owns the different television rights of more than 1,200 films in Hindi and other Indian languages, had provided films for satellite broadcast to Zee and other channels earlier also.

But its latest deal with Zee is considered most lucrative.

“Content syndication involves a lot of thought and planning, keeping in mind the nature of content and the platform of syndication. We are certain that this satellite deal with Zee will prove beneficial to both,” said Vinod Karani, vice-president, content syndication, Shemaroo Entertainment.

According to Shemaroo director Hiren Gada, the company has India’s largest library of films.

“We own different rights of these films and part with them for specific period, ranging from 5 to 7 years, to different electronic media. We constantly replenish our library with new films,” he said.

Priyanka is amazingly focussed: Bhandarkar

Is Madhur Bhandarkar’s “Fashion” going to do for Priyanka Chopra what his “Chandni Bar” did for Tabu and “Satta” did for Raveena Tandon?

The vibes between the film’s director and Priyanka who comes straight from the actioner “Drona” to the delicate intricacies of the beau monde in “Fashion” has to be believed to be seen.

“She’s amazingly focussed and intelligent. I’ve just worked for a few days with her. But Priyanka will be very special in ‘Fashion’,” Bhandarkar says.

The film’s other leading lady Kangana Ranaut is yet to start shooting. “But I’ve written some powerful confrontation scenes between the two actresses. They will be fabulous together, I know it,” says Bhandarkar.

Bhandarkar hopes to wrap up the shooting by June. He denies rumours that the film is heading for the Paris Fashion Week.

“We could shoot the fashion week in New York, Milan or Paris. And these scenes don’t have to be integral to the plot. They could just be part of the credit titles for all we know.”

“See, ‘Fashion’ is my most glamorous film to date, I don’t deny that,” admits Bhandarkar. “But to me getting to the emotional core of my characters is very important. Fashion won’t be a superficial glossy film. Like all my films it will have a very strong emotional core.”

Bollywood 2007: Few exceptions, no feats

I’ll be honest. Apart from a few exceptions, I don’t think 2007 delivered any outstanding films. I mean, I really liked Sriram Raghavan’s noire film “Johnny Gaddar”, but finally it wasn’t that one piece de resistance I was looking for, until the yearend when Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s ‘Saawariya’ wrote poetry on the screen with the calm controlling measured paces of historical engravings.

Every one was a bit befuddled by the film’s bluesy mood and studio-confined romanticism. But as Preity Zinta, who recently saw the film in Toronto and raved, “It takes a while, but once you get into the pace you’re completely sucked in.”

I’ll have to go with that. I sincerely believe “Saawariya” is destined to be a retro-classic like Guru Dutt’s “Kaagaz Ke Phool” and Raj Kapoor’s “Mera Naam Joker”. Was it just a coincidence that the “Saawariya” lead reminded people of Waheeda Rehman and Raj Kapoor?

My second favourite film of the year was also slammed by the learned critics of Mumbai. But to me Pradeep Sarkar’s “Laaga Chunari Mein Daag” about a simple Varanasi girl’s journey into prostitution in Mumbai was a lyrical and evocative piece of art, echoing Ritwik Ghatak’s “Meghe Dhaka Tara” and K. Balachander’s neglected “Aaina”.

So there! And then comes R. Balkrishnan’s “Cheeni Kum”. The chemistry between the 60-plus chef Amitabh Bachchan and the 30-plus whatever Tabu was harnessed into a romantic comedy that lost its fizz in the second-half. Never mind. “Cheeni Kum” is still a modern classic.

Bhavna Talwar’s “Dharm” about religious bigotry and atonement in holy Varanasi was a timeless tale told with verve and virility. The key to the film’s tantalising tone was the knack of incorporating a critical social comment in an enormously watchable film.

You may have missed “Dharm” on release. But catch it on a DVD, and re-live a golden chapter of Hindi cinema in 2007.

Golden in its own right was Mira Nair’s “The Namesake”. Though strictly not desi stuff, it was so Indian at heart it put our contemporary Bollywood tales about hot dames and cool dudes to shame. Simplicity was never such a prized virtue.

Mira, take a bow.

The two qualities that made Imtiaz Ali’s “Jab We Met” so special were the disarming simplicity and the great outdoors. Imtiaz shot this artless love story about a mismatched couple in the remotest corners of India. Interestingly, “Saawariya” shot its romance completely inside a studio. Between the two films we have the two scintillating ends of the same spectrum.

I loved Anurag Basu’s “Life In A Metro” and Madhur Bhandarkar’s “Traffic Signal” for their ensemble cast of known, unknown and don’t-wanna-know. The portrayal of life in Mumbai as seen through two totally antithetical perspectives in the two films reminded us that between the elite and the street crowds, there’s the world that the creative artiste could inhabit if he or she wishes.

Shimit Amin’s “Chak De! India” was undoubtedly one of the year’s most spectacular achievements. Imagine a film on a female hockey team with
India’s biggest superstar playing a burnt-out coach? Nah! Not work.

“Chak De! India” didn’t just run it, the movie breezed across all competition and assumed a cult status. It set the benchmark for all sports films in India.

The funniest film of the year was… no, not “Bhool Bhulaiyaa” (god forbid!) but another NRI film. “The Loins Of Punjab Presents” was Manish Acharya’s feisty, tasty, racy look at contestants in a reality show with the show’s highlight being Shabana Azmi crooning “Chura liya hai tumne”.

Comfortably, the most heart-warming film of 2007 was “Taare Zameen Par” with an immensely satisfying directorial debut by Aamir Khan. That the film came at the end of the year only added to the feeling that 2008 holds great promise.

The year 2007 came with its baggage of disappointments. The year’s biggest letdown was Anil Mehta’s directorial debut in “Aaja Nachle”. What was Mehta thinking when he brought Madhuri Dixit back in such a feebly written script and anaemically directed tale?

In comparison, I loved Siddharth Anand’s “Ta Ra Rum Pum”, which suffered only because the film’s concept of poverty entailed the insolvent family moving from Manhattan to Queen’s in New York.

How about from Malabar Hill to Dharavi?

And an honorary mention of debutant director Manoj Tyagi’s much-neglected “Mumbai Salsa” about six youngsters scouring Mumbai for love, sex and a self-identity - the film worked because of its sassy dialogues and situations, energy level, humour and originality.

The newcomers weren’t hyped like the girls in “Chak De! India”, but were effective because of their nondescript personalities.

As for the outright creative duds of the year, let’s not even go there.

Hrithik Roshan as Gautam Buddha?

Hrithik Roshan as Gautam Buddha?

National Award winning director Shyam Benegal is busy these days in completing his romantic comedy ‘Mahadev’. After this project, Benegal is keen on making a big budget film based on the life of Gautam Buddha.

And guess who with play this lifetime role of Lord Buddha? It will be none other than the actor who will hit the screens soon in the role of ‘Akbar’. Yes, Benegal is interested in signing Hrithik Roshan for the role as he thinks that Hrithik’s face has a calm serenity and he is perfectly suited to play the role of Buddha.

Roshan has been approached by the filmmaker and the actor has expressed interest in the project and has asked for its script. Benegal and his team of writers are now putting the script together.

Shyam Benegal wants to start the film next year. By then, Hrithik also would have recuperated from his knee injury because of which Hrithik has taken 2-3 months’ break from work.

Bollywood’s serial kisser upset with our Bong beauty

Bollywood’s serial kisser upset with our Bong beauty:

The little birdie is carrying it around that Bipasha Basu walked out of ‘Raaz 2’ because she did not want to pair opposite Emraan Hashmi. This has obviously hurt Emraan who has just returned from a 45-day schedule in South Africa for his forthcoming project ‘Jaanat’.

Emraan retorts, “Once the script is approved, we will start shooting. As far as Bipasha is concerned, it’s her creative liberty and decision who she wants to work with. My life doesn’t stop with her not being a part of my films.”

“I don’t care in the least who does Raaz 2. I am doing the film, I like my role and the film will do well with or without her!” adds the serial kisser of Bollywood.

Anyway, the actor beams talking about Vishesh Films’ ‘Jannat’, “Jannat’s tagline says in search of heaven he found hell. It’s a love story and will go down well with the youth.”

The goodies offered by 2007

The goodies offered by 2007:

2007 was a great year for Bollywood at box office with big banners taking most of the cream. If we look at the hits of 2007, OSO definitely is quite a few leaps ahead of all others. Let us brief it out along with the others:

Om Shanti Om

This was a mega hit of 2007 both within India and abroad. It’s perfect marketing strategy, the hype of reviving the golden past, the magic of SRK, the perfection of Farah Khan and the surprise package of Deepika Padukone oozing freshness and diva like appeal- all added up to make the film a huge hit.

Chak De India

This was another hit from SRK. The film is unique in itself owing to the fact that it has no female lead to add glamour and also dealt with a sport (hockey) which is not a big craze among an average Indian. Nevertheless, the perfect handling of the subject made it a surprise hit of 2007.

Partner

The magical combination of Govinda and Salman Khan worked wonders and this unofficial comeback of Govinda set the cash registers ringing for the producers. The film had foot tapping musical scores and gorgeous Katrina Kaif to add up to the factors contributing to it’s success.

Heyy Babyy

2007 was definitely an year of Akshay Kumar who emerged as the king of comedies in the year. Though Vidya Balan’s makeover look aroused negative critisicms, the film managed to come across as a majot hit of the year.

Namaste London

Talking about Akshay Kumar, this again was an average hit which dealt with the subject of romantic comedy. Along with Partner and Welcome, this added to make a hattrick of hits for Katrina Kaif in 2007.

Bhool Bhulaiyan

The magic of Akshay Kumar and Vidya Balan worked yet again in ‘Bhool Bhulaiyan’ which was an experiment in the sense that it successfully managed to balance thriller with comedy.

Guru

This was undoubtedly the best movie of 2007 which gave a lifetime performance from Abhishek Bachchan blending well with a mature delivery from Aishwarya Rai (Bachchan). The year also saw this on-screen couple tying knots in real life too amidst much hype making them the most talked about couple of the year.

Jab We Met

Last but not the least, making it’s way to the top 10 was this love story from Imtiaz Ali. How much and in what way, the breakup of Shahid- Kareena affected the movie, is still to be worked out, but the movie managed to carved it’s niche at the box-office owing to the freshness and a superb performance from Kareena and Shahid.

Bad year for Bollywood

A string of flops has left the Hindi film industry bleeding badly

MUMBAI: Out of the 236 movies released so far this year, only about 15 have made it to the hit mark. The alarming number of flops in the year 2007 came as a huge shock, especially because it rained hits in 2006.

By the end of first quarter of the year, Bollywood had already suffered losses to the extent of Rs600 to Rs700 million. Till March, only one film, Guru emerged as a universal hit, with all the other ones like Nikhil Advani’s Salaam-e-Ishq, Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s Eklavya, Ram Gopal Varma’s Nishabd, Vikram Bhatt’s Red, Amrit Sagar’s 1971, Milan Luthria’s Hattrick, Anurag Kashyap’s Black Friday, Deepa Mehta’s Water, Meghna Gulzar’s Just Married, Suneel Darshan’s Shakalaka Boom Boom, hitting the dust. Nishabd and Eklavya turned out to be huge duds. Then Akshay Kumar’s Namastey London was successful, bringing in the much-needed respite.

After July, films like Partner, Chak De India, Heyy Babyy, Bhool Bhulaiya, Jab We Met and the super hit Om Shanti Om attracted audiences, providing a bit of a breather for the distributors.

Amod Mehra, trade analyst, says even then the trend is alarming. He says, “If you notice, apart from Chak De all the other films that have done well are those typical commercial formula films. We seem to have digressed back to the same tried-and-tested formula. People can scream their lungs out saying that script is the king, but the fact remains that the viewer is no longer ready to risk his money for anything that seems unlikely to entertain him, especially since multiplex rates have hit the roof.

Take Om Shanti Om, or Guru. The treatment might be different but they are the same formula commercial movies. Saawariya is not as big a dud as it is made out to be. Though the film was disappointing, as per the expectations of the distributors, as it was a Sanjay Leela Bhansali, it had a decent opening. The first three days of Saawariya were very good. Small films are dying out, thanks to ticket rates and piracy. Now, for a viewer to be remotely interested, either the film has to look entertaining enough or it has to be well publicised.”

For a distributor, it has been a terrible year, says distributor Pankaj Jaisingh. “It’s a really bad situation. Films are flopping left, right and centre. We don’t know where we are going. Business is really bad. The prices of the movies have gone through the roof. Even with few hit movies last year, the producer might have made the money but the distributor just about covered the costs. With corporates entering the field, there is a mad rush amongst distributors and surprisingly, we have stopped thinking about profits, we are more concerned about getting a movie at any cost.”

Jaisinghani says the distributors have lost about 50 per cent of the capital that they have invested in.

“Even with small films like Khoya Khoya Chand and Dus Kahaniyan, there are about 75 per cent losses to the distributor.”

One of the other surprising trends seen is that the viewer is no more concerned about the credibility of the production company. Yashraj’s four movies out of the five released this year bit the dust, perhaps shaking the image of the empire a wee bit.

However, Tushar Dhingra, COO of Adlabs believes that in spite of the string of flops, statistically 2007 was better than last year. He says, “The marketing has been more aggressive and I would say that the quality of films were better than the quantity. If you take films like Hey Baby and Om shanti Om, or even Aaja Nachle, they might not be stellar box office hits, but the fact remains that they have had better weekends. The quality of the movies has improved quite a bit and we need to concentrate on that.”

Was the year 2007 unlucky for Yash Raj production?

Last year,Yash Raj produced successful movies like Dhoom2,Fanaa and Kabul Express but in 2007 the banner gave just one super-hit movie,Chak De,out of the five relased by Yash Raj Production.Even Bachchans couldn't save Jhoom Barabar Jhoom

WHAT HAPPENED to Yash Raj production, which has given us blockbusters such as Silsila, Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge and Veer Zaara in early years? These movies may be called as milestones in the history of bollywood. Now, the same production house has given us series of disasters such as Jhoom Barabar Jhoom, Tara Ram Pam, Lagaa Chunari Mein Daag and the most recent Aaja Nachle in year 2007.
Yash Chopra is considered to be an unfathomable figure in bollywood. He has made the emotion-packed movie like Dhool Ka Phool. At the same time, he went on to create the angry young man image through movies such as Deewar, Trishul and Joshila. He embodied great flexibility in his movies during that period. For every Mashaal, there was a soulful Lamhe.
On one side he portrayed Shahrukh Khan as an obsessive lover in Darr, on the other hand Vinod Khanna as the sacrificing lover in Chandni. His son, Aditya Chopra, made ‘Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jaayenge’ that became one of the biggest blockbusters in bollywood film industry.

Over the years, the Yash Raj Camp, which had been nurturing talent for a long time, decided to provide a platform to budding directors to help them in realizing their dreams in bollywood. New directors like Sanjay Gadhvi, Kunal Kohli, Shaad Ali, Siddharth Anand, Arjun Sablok and Shimit Amin have all been given chance under the Yash Raj banner. It resulted in increased numbers of the films with degraded quality of movies produced by the banner.

However, the year 2006 had been a good year for Yash Raj with successful movies such as Dhoom 2, Fanaa and Kabul express but in 2007, it gave just one super-hit movie out of the five released by Yash Raj production. Even Bachchans couldn’t change the fate of movie Jhoom Barabar Jhoom. The critics have hit out at all the movies including Rani Mukherjee’s Lagaa Chunari Mein Daag and Saif and Rani starrer Tara Ram Pam. Chak De was single movie that did fair business this year.

In Bollywood, the reputations and fate change in just one day and it seems Yash Raj production is losing the reputation it has earned in so many years. They have Tashan and Roadside Romeo to look forward in 2008 and they can hope for the best by not looking back to the history.

Aamir Khan is seeing stars

The actor and first time director is seeing stars, and is found pinching himself now and again. The response to his film Taare Zameen Par has been heart warming and Aamir feels that it is a similar kind of response that Lagaan evoked.

He says, “I am so moved by the response, I am unable to express myself properly. I feel at a loss for words. I just want to thank all of you for such a heart warming reaction. I feel like I am breathing pure oxygen."

Breathe on!

madhuri mein nahi nachoohgi

Madhuri’s comeback film Aaja Nachle didn’t exactly set the box office on fire and now we hear that Mrs. Madhuri Dixit Nene is having a serious second thought of taking up more work. “She’s upset that her grand comeback did little to revive her comeback and she doesn’t want her film to land up like this,” says one of her friend. Our advice to all those producers who are waiting with signing amounts to think of a quick replacement...

Security Starter Kit

COMODO firwall pro With a new year comes new computers, and that means new security problems. Viruses, spyware, rootkits, hackers--a fresh machine can be susceptible to the most insidious of plots. Lucky for you, here in the CNET Download.com defense bunker, we've devised a list of essential and free top-rated security programs to protect the honor of your computer and ensure that your sanity will last longer than your resolutions.

Categories covered include Firewall, Antivirus, Spyware remover,

Web-surfing adviser, Parental control, Pop-up blocker, and Encryption.

Firewall

Comodo Firewall Pro has eradicated most of its resource-hogging ways and gives users what they want: a flexible yet simple firewall that's great for beginners but also provides a smorgasbord of information and plenty of options for advanced users

From the category tabs of Summary, Firewall, Defense +, and Miscellaneous to more specific headings, most security terms come linked to relevant security issues so users can drill down to learn more about how the firewall is performing. Although the app rears its head often when you first fire it up, once it learns your behavior, it becomes virtualy unnoticeable.

Antivirus
AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition
provides all the necessities to destroy infections, including tools for scanning your hard drive and e-mail, as well as a real-time shield to prevent infections.
By default, it's set to update new virus definitions daily, but you always can use the scheduler to change this. Should a virus create serious system problems, AVG creates a rescue disk to scan your computer in MS-DOS mode. The program doesn't tax your system when scanning or when running in the background and always proved effective in our tests. The interface isn't pretty, but it isn't hard to navigate, either.

Avira Antivir

does double-duty, protecting against spyware and viruses alike. For users who want backups or want to have their antivirus and antispyware separate, we've recommended alternatives. Antivir's scans are flexible, allowing the user to check all hard drives, choose a preloaded scan--for rootkits, for example--or customize. After testing on several machines, no viruses turned up, although several malicious hidden files did rear their heads. The heuristic scan can be turned on or off completely or partially, with three different intensity levels.

The quarantine offers extensive support, too, although the definition file updater can be sluggish. Still, combining effective antimalware and antivirus tools into one is a freeware luxury

Spyware remover

The tiny Trend Micro HijackThis examines vulnerable or suspect parts of your system and scrubs them clean of whatever malfeasance has infected them. It can be a complicated program to use, but also one that's extremely effective.

After a scan, don't check off an item and hit the Fix Checked button unless you're sure it's malware. Clicking Info will tell you why the entry was flagged, but to learn if it's malware you need to search the Web or check out a forum such as SpywareInfo or Computer Cops. Saving the log creates a text document you can post to these forums. HijackThis is a serious tool for any user who needs to root out a serious infestation, but wield it with caution.

Web-surfing adviser

McAfee SiteAdvisor for Firefox and Internet Explorer warns you about covert spyware and browser-hijack attempts as you visit a site.

It operates as an unobtrusive signal in your browser's interface, turning green if the site is safe, yellow if it's suspect, and red if it senses threats. The same system applies to search results, inserting a colored icon next to each link. Clicking one provides threat diagnostics, including links to suspect sites, spam counts, and dangerous downloads. In our tests, SiteAdvisor turned out accurate and reliable results, and though it doesn't have a wide array of features, we encourage all users to try this extension.

Parental control

K9 Web Protection
provides many options for customizing your remote Web supervision needs, but also comes with a handful of predesigned filters. With more than 50 categories for organizing Web sites, and a keyword-free rating system, the Web monitoring and blocking aspects of the software functioned well. Equally impressive--and a little bit scary--was the log that detailed not just blocked Web sites but also every Web site visited.

Installation and removal isn't easy: Be prepared for a multistep process. K9 does lack a chatware filter, leaving some holes for predation.
Pop-up blocker
No matter which browser you use,

Pop-up Stopper Free Edition
has you covered. You can specify different sound and text-bubble alarms or set your mouse to change colors when the program blocks a pop-up ad. Unlike some of its ilk, this utility doesn't affect the Open in New Window right-click context-menu command. You can allow individual pop-up windows by holding the Ctrl or Shift key.
The one drawback to the free edition is that it limits your configuration options and doesn't let you specify pop-ups you want to always allow. Despite those drawbacks, Pop-Up Stopper Free Edition is still a great weapon in the war against annoying pop-up pests.
Encryption

RoboForm
might strike some as an odd choice for an encryption program, but it uses powerful encryption algorithms such as Blowfish and AES to protect your data. Combined with password generator technology, users choose one strong password instead of having to remember several. It reduces time spent filling out Web forms and logging onto subscription sites by remembering all your info.
You can set up multiple identities with different credit card numbers, passwords, and contact information. The trial limits the tab instances on each identity to three, but you can make plenty of identities. There's also search and hot-key support, and a one-click Login feature for submitting forms.

Vista's biggest problem is Windows XP

Vista's biggest problem is Windows XP:

Computerworld reports on a recent survey of nearly 600 U.S. and European companies that have more than 1,000 employees; the study says 84 percent of all those companies' PCs now run Windows XP, up from 67 percent the year before."

That sounds pretty good for the Windows monopoly, right? So, one could assume that Vista should start to creep into those numbers.

Nearly a third of the polled businesses--32 percent to be exact--said they would begin deploying Vista by the end of 2008, while another 17 percent said they would start in
2009 or 2010.

Still good, right?

But more than half of all companies remain skittish about Vista, according to Forrester's data.

What's interesting is that many open-source companies find their biggest competition to be themselves--that is, the free version of their products. What Microsoft is competing with is the absorbed-cost version of Windows XP that customers already have. But XP wasn't actually free. Customers were bonked on the head to move from W2K (and I would say it was a good upgrade) and now are being strong-armed to upgrade to Vista, which has minimal upside.
Vista simply isn't compelling enough to upgrade.
