Burden lifted for woman told she killed her baby sister 50 years ago - as coroner pins the blame on her mother

An Australian woman who grew up believing she'd killed her baby sister was finally cleared after almost 50 years today when a coroner ruled their mother murdered the infant.

Ann Kramer was just two years old in March 1961 when her mother blamed her for killing her six-month-old sister Margaret Loomes by placing a plastic bag over her head.

A police investigation at the time concluded the baby's death was a tragic accident.

Overturning the original 1961 ruling, coroner John Olle today ruled that it was Ms Kramer's mother Phyllis Loomes who was responsible for the baby's death at the family home in Clayton, Victoria.

Mr Olle said it was likely Mrs Loomes blamed her daughter because she was suffering from postnatal depression.

Mrs Loomes confessed to the killing on a number of occasions in the early 1970s.

Ms Kramer told the hearing that her mother had told her she was unwell when she killed Margaret because her husband Colin Loomes did not want his second child to be another daughter.

'For many years growing up as a child I just felt awful,' Ms Kramer told the hearing. 'I thought I must've been a horrid child to kill my sister.'

She added that despite her mother's confessions, people still thought her responsible for her sister's death: 'They still thought I was a murderer.'

Between 1960 and 1980 Mrs Loomes was regularly admitted to psychiatric hospitals attempted suicide several times.

She had another five children with her husband before they divorced in 1978. In 1980, Mrs Loomes fatally struck him on the head with a heavy object but was found unfit to stand trial for his murder.

She committed suicide in 1983.

Passing his ruling - which came about after Ms Kramer wrote to the coroner asking for the original ruling to be changed - Mr Olle said: 'For almost half a century, she has carried the indescribable burden of having caused the death of her baby sister.

'In fact, she bore no responsibility whatsoever for the death of Margaret.'

Top 10 Games for President Obama

Top 10 Games for President Obama

We pick ten games the incoming President can't do without.

You know, being the leader of the most awesome country in the world is no easy task. And worse still, there's no real way to prepare properly for it. Fortunately, the world of video games offers many would-be Commanders-in-Chief the opportunity to take a test run of some of their social, economic and military strategies and see how things end up. After all, if the North Koreans drop the bomb on us, it's a piece of cake to load up an earlier save and wipe them out before they even get the chance. The stakes are pretty high for our next President and, since there's no option for him to reload the country if things go to crap, we thought we'd offer President Obama a list of ten games that will surely help him prepare for this next term and rehearse his responses to some of the crises he might face.

The Political Machine 2008

Okay, okay. He already won the election for 2008, but that's no reason not to skip over this one. Not only does it give the Obama team a head start on preparing for the next election, but it also serves as a nice snapshot of public opinion before the most recent election. So if the team wants to know how their stance on universal health care or higher gas taxes might fly in a given state, they don't have to call on some fancy pants Department Secretary; they can just boot up the game and see for themselves.

Tropico

Alright, running the United States isn't quite like being the dictator of a small, impoverished Caribbean island (at least yet) , but there are definitely some important lessons to be learned here. First, the economic crisis and social unrest in Tropico will more than prepare our next President to deal with the current recession and political friction he'll encounter as he negotiates the next four years. And if it teaches him how to skim a little cash off the top to fund his retirement, well, that's a risk I think we'll have to take.

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney

With so many members of the Supreme Court being ripe for retirement (we're looking at you, Stevens), it's likely that President Obama will have the opportunity to appoint at least a couple of judges over the next few years. And what better way to get a handle on what makes a good judge than by diving into the adventures of everyone's favorite rookie defense attorney, Phoenix Wright? By following Phoenix's process of investigation, questioning and cross-examination, our new President will have all the information he needs to determine who should sit in the nation's highest judicial office.

Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare

In addition to being the nation's highest executive officer, the President is also the Commander-in-Chief of the nation's military. To better prepare the President to realize the full potential of our modern infantry weapons and to give him a greater sense of the consequences of sending young men and women into harm's way, we suggest that the President take on the challenges of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. Though he'll miss out on the thrilling boot camp experience that makes life in the Marines so appealing, there's no way the game can help but improve his respect for our military.

Tiger Woods PGA Tour 09

It can't all be work, of course, so we wanted to give Obama a chance for a little recreation as well. Golf is the perennial presidential pastime, and we'd like to give President Obama the opportunity to strengthen his game by getting in a few virtual rounds with Tiger Woods. Better yet, Tiger's own coach, Hank Haney, will provide a number of useful golfing tips that are sure to come in handy when the President has to hit the links with Kim Jong-il.

Trevor Chan's Capitalism II

President Calvin Coolidge once said, "The business of America is business," so it would be worthwhile for President Obama to investigate the ins and outs of the corporate world. And there's no better place to start than Trevor Chan's celebrated series. This economic management game will force Obama to consider all that's involved in the manufacturing and marketing of good, all while managing the bottom line. And if things get really bad, the President can petition Enlight to develop and publish Trevor Chan's Bailout.

My Spanish Coach

The demographics of America are changing and it's time for future Presidents to make an effort to understand and communicate with the diverse elements of electorate in their own native language. There's no better place to start than by reaching out the Spanish-speaking Latinos and Hispanics who live and work in the United States. Sure, it may not have worked out quite so well for Bill Richardson, but there's no reason for President Obama not to strengthen his ability to communicate with such a large and important part of the electorate.

Tom Clancy's EndWar

The Clancy brand has always offered up loads of fun for National Security Agency and Department of Defense hopefuls so we have to make sure that President Obama gets in on the action. In this case, we're chosing this ripped-from-tomorrow's-headlines strategy game that simulates a world war sparked by a resource shortage. Better yet, the game's option to play using voice commands should be a perfect opportunity for the incoming President to practice bossing people around.

DEFCON

A man who has his finger on the button is a man with a lot of responsibility. So before President Obama reaches for those launch codes, we'd like him to check out this terrifying wargame that simulates a worldwide nuclear war. The real point of the game is that you can't ever really win in a nuclear exchange with another power, so the only goal is to see who can lose the least. I mean, not to get all preachy or anything, but it's a lesson that we'd like anyone who sits in the Oval Office to learn.

Supreme Ruler 2010
It may not be the best of the games on the list, but if our Commander-in-Chief is going to excel at his job, he's going to have to master many of the same sorts of challenges presented by this game. With full control over his country's infrastructure and military might, he'll be able to explore the use and abuse of that power in a format that won't actually affect anyone in the real world. So, if for instance, he wants to see what, if anything, might happen if we invaded Canada, he could just give it a run-through in Supreme Ruler first.

Has Kareena broken up with Saif?

Post the success of 'Jab We Met', Kareena Kapoor has been all over the place.

Her relationship with Chotey Nawab Saif Ali Khan and the fact that they were seen joint at the hip at loads of places also made sure that it was so.

Shoots and social gatherings kept her in the news, but the movie for which she developed her size zero frame-'Tashan' flopped badly.

Only the Diwali release 'Gomaal Returns' made money but then the credit for the same doesn't go to her fully.

After all, it was a multi-starrer with a lot of boy bonding.

This sort of depressed the actress who thought that her career is going downhill and that's why she's decided to make her high profile relationship low profile now.

In the New Year she's realized that being in the media glare all the time with Saif is harming her.

So she's decided to play it safe and is not breaking up completely. Instead she's keeping her private life away from the media.

Well, it seems Kareena has realized what was needed to be realized. Let's see if this strategy actually helps her out in the long run or not.

Ajay Devgan in his new ‘rockstar’ avataar

‘London Dreams’ directed by Vipul Shah and starring Salman Khan, Ajay Devgan and Asin is supposedly based on the story of a music band and both Salman and Ajay play rock stars in the film. While one succeeds, the other fails. Both of them fall in love with Asin’s character, a South Indian musician. Well, it would be quite a refreshing change to see the ‘Deadly Devgan’ in a different avatar this time coz he is more seen in serious roles.

The look of Ajay Devgan in the film done by designer Ana Singh was leaked while the crew filmed a song sequence in London’s Trafalgar square. Ajay was seen sporting a cool look- with spiked hair, cool glares, a dark jacket and a scarf tied around his neck, not to forget the earrings he wears.

Interestingly, London Dreams and the recently released Rock On share the same music directors Shankar, Ehsaan and Loy.

A golden ‘Ghajini’ statue for Aamir Khan

‘Ghajini’ had everything new about it- be it a very unique storyline, be it Aamir’s new hairstyle, be it the innovative way of promoting it, be it the launch of Van Huesen ‘Ghajini’ line and the latest being the never before heard gesture of appreciation from producer Madhu Mantena to Aamir Khan.

Madhu Mantena presented a solid-gold statue to Aamir designed specially to resemble Aamir’s Ghajini look at the party held to celebrate the film’s success earlier this week.

“8 abs included. We can see all 8 of them on the statue,” Mantena states proudly.

The statuette is pure gold and probably cost the producer close to Rs. 70-80 lakhs though he isn’t telling.

“It has certain amount of other metal to make it malleable. Solid gold wouldn’t allow the identical Ghajini shape to be done in gold. But the idea was to create an Oscar-sized statue exclusively for Ghajini. Aamir knew he was getting a trophy. But he didn’t know it would be golden and with his Ghajini’s look. He was overwhelmed,” says Mantena.

Director Murugadoss was also given a statue, though far less hefty and golden than Aamir’s, but of course including the 8-abs.

Forensic experts to help crack Satyam scam

Government is seeking the help of private forensic accountants to unravel the India's big corporate fraud done by Satyam's Ramalinga Raju. The govt agencies are finding it hard to decipher the complex accounting web created by Raju. He has cooked the Satyam books for many years but nobody could detect it till Raju himself admitted fudging the accounts.

The govt investigators are finding it difficult to figure out the intricated accounting web Raju has done. He might have played around with the format of accounts, sources disclosed.
Forensic accounting experts from KPMG have been called in to unravel the scam as normal review team would find it too complex to decipher it.

KPMG is the global network of professional services firms whose aim is to turn understanding of information, industries, and business trends into value. Restating the accounts of Satyam is now the task of KPMG along with Delloite.

Through the forensic probe, investing agenices are trying to get into the roots of the fraud as forensic reports will give clues acout criminal' s behaviour also. A new accounting format will be developed by the investigation team which will not leave any scope for such forgeries in future.
Forensic experts are helping Serious Fraud Investigation Office (SFIO) which is investigating Satyam scam

CC2C crashes all BO hopes, a toothless comedy worth a miss

We had great expectations, immense hope that right from the beginning of the year 2009, Akshay will do wonders in the film ‘Chandni Chowk to China’ and Box Office would be flooded with unprecedented collection.

It was also being said that ‘Chandni Chowk to China,’ made in the budget of Rs 80 cr will bridge the gap between Hollywood and Bollywood. But ‘Kinng’ Akshay disappoints and the film appears nothing but a waste of time and money.

Such is the effect of the film that one will have to think thrice before watching Akshay’s next film. The actor has gone over-the-top and over confident in his comic sequences. The storyline is miserable and the plot flawed.

The story revolves around Siddhu (Akshay Kumar) – a vegetable chopper in Chandni Chowk. He wants to learn and acquire everything without doing anything. On the other hand, there is a small village in China, which is ruled by the evil Jojo (Gordon Liu). The villagers want to escape from his rule and eagerly await some messiah, who would free them.

Incidentally, they come across Siddhu in Chandni Chowk and feel that he is God sent for them. They start considering him as their king and take him to China. As a result, Siddhu reaches China, and attempts various jocularly acts. He also meets two separated sisters Sukhi and Suzi (Deepika Padukone). But amidst all this, he looses his Dada (Mithun), who keeps egging him on to fight, despite being a ghost. This comes as a turning point in his life and he goes on to become a master in Kung Fu. Now, who will win at the end is anybody’s guess but the way the climax has been presented is obnoxious.

Nikhil Advani has failed on directorial front. Even if you avoid looking at the technical flaws, there are serious problems with direction. Comic sequences are lame and incapable of evoking laughter. Camerawork is good but music disappoints. Except for the title track, there is nothing worth commending on and choreography is equally poor.

Apart from Akshay’s worthless attempt at comedy, other actors too have done their best to try the audience’s patience. Deepika Padukone has been reduced to a glam-doll and her much hyped action scenes are a work of special effects, Ranvir Shorey’s role was short and Mithun Chakraborty has done nothing except for thrashing Akshay.

To sum it up, CC2C appears like a cartoon film – as Akshay had mentioned. Ironically, in the climax scene, the filmmaker has put the board of ‘To be continued’. But evidentally after seeing the fate of the film, moviemakers Warner Brothers would never agree to continue with it. Two cheers!

CAT ENTRANCE 2008 RESULTS

CAT IIM 2008 Results click here

CAT results to be declared today

CHENNAI: With the results of the Common Admission Test (CAT 2008) scheduled to be declared on Friday morning, a considerable number of B-School aspirants are
anxious as the 2008 edition of CAT has thrown up unexpected surprises.

"This was the first time we had to attempt 40 questions in the verbal ability and reading comprehension section, while in the previous editions we had to write only 25 questions in this section," pointed out Shruti Raman of Avadi.

Besides, the CAT 2008 question paper carried 360 marks for 90 questions, which was markedly different from the earlier versions where students had to answer only 75 questions carrying a total of 300 marks.

"The first thing I will do on Friday is to log on to the CAT website to know my score. I have also registered for receiving the results by e-mail, as a back-up option," Shruti said.

The results will be hosted on the website hhtp://results.catiim.in and candidates also have an option of getting the results by SMS. "To receive the results by SMS, the candidate must type in his/her CAT registration number and send it to 57333," an official notification said.

In addition to the IIMs, more than 50 B-Schools across the country admit students based on their CAT scores. Institutions in Tamil Nadu which admit students on the basis of the CAT scores include the Bharathidasan Institute of Management in Tiruchi, National Institute of Technology in Tiruchi, Amrita School of Business in Coimbatore and the Institute for Financial Management and Research in Chennai.

Satyam open to sell-off, says Interim CEO

Hyderabad, Dec 08: Facing a severe liquidity crunch as a result of the fraud by its founder B. Ramalinga Raju, Satyam Computers announced it is scouting for a strategic investor. The company also said that it is committed to protect the interests of its staff and customers. "We are looking for a strategic investor for raising liquidity. We have engaged an investment bank to shortlist the prospective investors. We will take a decision on it at the upcoming board meeting on January 10," Satyam interim chief executive Ram Maynampati said at a press conference.

Admitting that the current cash balance was not encouraging, Mynampati said efforts were being made to improve the liquidity position to ensure business continuity.

“Our immediate priority is to ensure that business goes on uninterrupted,” Mynampati told media persons on a day when SEBI sent a team to Hyderabad to initiate a probe into the Rs 8000 cr fraud that shook India Inc. “We will ascertain the facts about this issue and will proceed expeditiously on the same,” he added.

On the question that has kept the investigators and investors perplexed- the whereabouts of Raju - the CEO said that “it is because of some personal reasons that the Chairman is not coming to office. He is in touch with us and I think he is in Hyderabad.”

He also said that he was not related to the promoters of Satyam and that his appointment as interim CEO is legal as it was supported by the other two board members. Following Raju's and managing director B. Rama Raju's resignations Wednesday, and that of four independent directors earlier, the nine-member board now has only three directors, including two independent directors - T.R. Prasad, V.S. Raju and Mynampati.

The CEO said the company was ready to cooperate with all investigating agencies. He also said that Board members were not in the know of the financial transactions that Raju conducted. “We rely on the audit carried out by an extremely reputed audit company and trust its data for coming to conclusions.” He however said they had not verified what process PricewaterhouseCoopers took to certify financial statements and were not yet in touch with PwC over this.

Stating that neither he nor any of the senior executives were aware of the events that unfolded Wednesday, Mynampati said client-servicing would continue with transparency to ensure smooth transition.

"Clients rely on Satyam for mission critical applications. We have reached out to our clients the world over and assured them of maintaining our service support as before," he said.

The company said it would ensure complete transparency; ensure smooth transition of leadership. We are in the process of identifying new candidates for Board, Mynampati said.

The company, which was represented by top seven members of Satyam, presented a united face when it said it will ensure all employees and customers are supported as they had extended their support to the company in this crises. They also pleaded for time saying that it was just 36 hours since the scam to light and they were still grappling with the situation.

“We are reaching out to 50,000 employees, top 100 clients and we are gratified at the response that we have got,” Mynampati said. Top 100 clients account for 80 per cent of Satyam's business, Mynampati added.

Informing that the resignation of CFO V Srinivas had come in only today, Mynampati said they were in the process of verifying financials and liquidity position of the company. An auditor has been appointed to look into the legitimacy and accuracy of the mail sent by Raju. “The CFO will join us next week as he is in a notice period,” he added minutes later.

He also revealed that liquidity was not very encouraging as far as cash-in-hand is concerned.

Tackling a question on payments to clients and employee salaries, Mynampati said that the remuneration for December had been paid out, but the company was low on liquidity and all other payments were being sorted out.

“This is a crisis of unimaginable proportion. We have not faced such a situation in our lifetime. We are verifying the balance sheets and other things. We are trying to come up with an assessment on impact, if any, on our payment dues etc. We are confident we will deal with all obligations…” he said.

Satyam fraud not one man show: KPMG

NEW DELHI: KPMG, which audits the accounts of IT majors like Infosys and Wipro, on Friday doubted the veracity of the confessional letter written

by B Ramalinga Raju, the
founder-chairman of Satyam Computer, saying the financial bungling cannot be done only by the head of the Hyderabad-based firm.

"It defies logic, one is not sure whether there is much more to it than is written in the letter and whether the letter contains all the facts," KPMG Chief Operating Officer Richard Rekhy said here on the sidelines of a CII function.

It is too simplistic at the moment to believe that the kind of thing that has happened in the company is done by Raju alone, he said.

"It requires a whole battery of people to advance those accounting entries and credit those because you have to involve other people as well like bankers to get those certificates," he said.

When asked whether Raju might have siphoned off funds and he is now admitting to lesser crime, he said it is quite possible but it could be known only after investigation of group companies.

Rekhy said investigation of Satyam companies should be done in such a way it should not hamper the business of IT major. He emphasised the need of an oversight agency for auditors.

Smoking mothers have higher risk of delivering aggressive baby

Previous studies have shown various harmful effects of smoking during pregnancy on the baby. Recent research has revealed that smoking during pregnancy increases the risk of delivering physically aggressive children.

Universite de Montreal researcher Jean Seguin, one of the lead researchers in the study, said, "What's new about this study is that we can pick up the link (between smoking and physical aggression) in children as early as 17 to 42 months of age."

Researchers studied the behaviour of 1,745 children who are part of a long-term research project called the Quebec longitudinal study.

Study revealed that the children of mothers who smoked at least 10 cigarettes a day had 30 percent higher risk of physical aggression as compared to the offspring of mothers who did not light up during pregnancy. Children of the mothers who had a serious history of anti-social behaviour and smoked heavily had 200 per cent greater risk than the offspring of women who did not smoke and had no anti-social history.

The study also revealed that heavy smokers with annual incomes of less than $40,000 had a 40-per-cent chance of having aggressive children, compared with 25 per cent for mothers who were moderate or non-smokers.

Aamir Khan and Preity Zinta to pair up again

After entertaining viewers with their sizzling chemistry in Dil Chahta hai, bollywood’s Mr. perfectionist Aamir Khan and bubbly Preity Zinta are pairing up again in Yash Chopra’s upcoming flick.

According to the sources, Yash Chopra has himself penned down the script of the flick. The rumor mills say that the movie, which is yet to get any title, is also going to be a romantic one like all Chopra films.

Vettori reclaims top spot in ICC rankings for ODI bowlers

Dubai, Jan 9: New Zealand captain Daniel Vettori has made a superb start to 2009 by becoming the number-one ranked ODI bowler in the world again.

The left-arm spinner, who turns 30 later this month, has taken six wickets in the first three matches of the current series against the West Indies at an impressive average of just 12.33 and a thrifty economy rate of 3.08.

In the process he has moved above Australia's Nathan Bracken into top spot in the Reliance Mobile ICC Player Rankings for ODI bowlers.

It is not the first time Vettori has been at the summit, having spent much of the first half of last year in first position. But Bracken toppled him in June 2008, coincidentally also while playing against the West Indies, but now the 31-year-old New South Welshman has been consigned to second spot once again.

Nevertheless, Bracken has the perfect opportunity to retake number-one place having been named in Australia's one-day squad for the upcoming five-ODI series against South Africa.

Things are continuing to go well for Vettori's team-mate Kyle Mills as his four wickets claimed in the series so far have earned him another place and put him in fourth, just ahead of Mitchell Johnson of Australia.

West Indies fast bowler Daren Powell has managed to move up two places to 17th position in the bowling rankings following a good start to the ODI series in New Zealand for him.

The big mover is young Black Cap Tim Southee who has managed to gain 20 places to put him in 75th position.

Another top-class player who has not fired on all cylinders during this series to date is West Indies talisman Chris Gayle. The hard-hitting left-hander has lost one place in the Reliance Mobile ICC Player Rankings for ODI batsmen and has dropped out of the top five, into sixth position.

His place has been taken by India's Yuvraj Singh, who returns to the top five after a brief spell occupying sixth place. Top spot is still reserved for Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who is closely followed by Michael Hussey of Australia in second place and Proteas' captain Graeme Smith in third. (ANI)

Aamir says he is charmed by SRK

Recently Aamir Khan said that he has no qualms about working with Shah Rukh, however, King Khan is “scared” to work with him. He also talked about his movies, ambition and the ‘perfectionist, control-freak’ tag that trails him whatever he does.

Aamir said, “I'm not a control freak. I'm realistic about my limits. When I act in a film, it's the director who is the boss. It's not my responsibility to control the film. But I'm always there if the director wants any help or suggestion. I just go with the flow.”

On being asked about his relationship with King Khan he replied that Shah Rukh Khan talks really big but he's a charming guy. He has no hesitation in saying that he is charmed by SRK.

It's just that media takes an extreme stand; it pits us as either enemies or as best friends. As for all our back-and-forth talks, it just shows that both of us have a good sense of humour.

15 reasons to go to the movies in 2009

It looks like a big year for Matt Damon

Not counting his cameos in “Che” and “Youth Without Youth,” Damon hasn’t been on screen since “The Bourne Ultimatum,” but he’ll be back in action in a big way in ‘09 (just not in another Bourne movie quite yet). He reunites with “Ocean’s Eleven” director Steven Soderbergh for the darkly comic thriller “The Informant” (Sept. 18, pictured) and “Bourne” director Paul Greengrass for the Iraq war action drama “Green Zone” (TBD). Then he takes a supporting role opposite Morgan Freeman’s Nelson Mandela in Clint Eastwood’s “The Human Factor” (Dec. TBD).

Damon is also rumored to be lending his voice to Disney’s English-language dub of the latest from Japanese animator Hayao Miyazaki, “Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea” (TBD), and he’s part of the cast of “You Can Count On Me” director Kenneth Lonergan’s long-delayed “Margaret” (TBD), which may (or may not) finally hit theaters this year.
