Bond may marry in next film

Gemma Arterton, who is starring in the next Bond film, has inadvertently revealed that the secret agent might get married.

Thesun.co.uk reports Arterton saying that she and Bond actor Daniel Craig were filming a scene in a honeymoon suite.

A shocked reporter immediately asked: "Honeymoon suite?" The embarrassed Arterton replied, "I think I've said too much."

Bond had got married in the 1969 hit On Her Majesty's Service, but his rival Blofeld killed the wife.

BCCI adopts tough stand again on Harbhajan issue

The Cricket Board today reiterated its stand on the Harbhajan Singh ban issue and threatened to call of the remainder of the tour of Australia unless the alleged racial abuse charge against the Indian off spinner was withdrawn in the two-day appeals hearing starting on Tuesday.

"Our stand remains the same as was the case earlier. We want the racial slur (against Harbhajan Singh) to be lifted. Otherwise the BCCI will recall the team from Australia," said its Vice-President Lalit Modi today.

Earlier in the day, Harbhajan's counsel V R Manohar made it clear that the Indian camp would oppose any "fishy" evidence that might be used against the off spinner to scuttle his defence during the two-day hearing.

ICC-appointed commissioner John Hansen, while laying down the procedure for the hearing, said "additional evidence" like transcript available from the stump microphone, could be admissible in the hearing scheduled to begin tomorrow in Adelaide.

The Indians, however, are against the idea.

"Anything which is legal and for the purpose of doing justice, we ourselves will co-operate. But if something fishy is done in the guise of doing justice we will object," Manohar said.

Manohar was also confident that the present evidence was enough to save the troubled off-spinner.

"I am very optimistic about Harbhajan Singh's innocence. Whatever material is there at present is innocuous and is in favour of Harbhajan Singh," Manohar said.

Harbhajan was slapped with a three-match ban by Match Referee Mike Procter after the Sydney Test for allegedly racially abusing Australian cricketer Andrew Symonds whose point was supported by three members of his team.

If some fresh evidence emerges which weakens the case of Harbhajan and allows the racial charge against the off spinner to continue, the forthcoming triangular series is in clear jeopardy by Modi's statement today.

The Indians have concluded the first part of the tour today, comprising four Tests, and the second half commences with the one-off Twenty20 international against the hosts to be held at Melbourne on February 1.

The tri-series of 50-over ODIs is to commence on February 3, also at Melbourne, and is scheduled to continue till March 7. The ODI series is to feature India, Australia and Sri Lanka

Edwards to Quit Presidential Race

DENVER (AP) - Democrat John Edwards is exiting the presidential race Wednesday, ending a scrappy underdog bid in which he steered his rivals toward progressive ideals while grappling with family hardship that roused voter's sympathies but never diverted his campaign, The Associated Press has learned.
The two-time White House candidate notified a close circle of senior advisers that he planned to make the announcement at a 1 p.m. EST event in New Orleans that had been billed as a speech on poverty, according to two of his advisers. The decision came after Edwards lost the four states to hold nominating contests so far to rivals who stole the spotlight from the beginning—Hillary Rodham Clinton and Barack Obama.

Health Costs Hinder Overhaul

he demise of California's proposed health-care restructuring underscores a difficulty states face in achieving universal insurance coverage: their inability to slow the upward trajectory of health-care costs, analysts said.
The defeat of the $14.9 billion bill backed by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and Assembly Speaker Fabian Núñez is a setback for state initiatives, but doesn't necessarily damp prospects for national reform, they said. That is because California's enormous uninsured population and shaky fiscal health made it a poor prospect for change.
"The conversation in California was more about trying to find ways to pay for coverage rather than to fundamentally change the health-care system and get at its big cost drivers," said Marian Mulkey, senior program officer at the California HealthCare Foundation, an Oakland, Calif., nonprofit organization. States don't have the "policy levers in their arsenal to do that kind of fundamental reform, when you consider how much of health care is driven by federal financing."

"It was only because of the enormous leadership and personality of the governor that they got as far as they did," said Paul B. Ginsburg, president of the Center for Studying Health System Change, a nonprofit in Washington. "With the economy souring, it became clear that this was way beyond California's fiscal capacity to pull off." Even if lawmakers had passed the bill, its fate was uncertain because it required approval by voters in a ballot initiative.

The California bill, hammered out by the two leaders, cleared the state Assembly in December, but failed to pass out of a Senate committee Monday. The plan would have covered about 70% of the state's 5.1 million uninsured residents through a combination of state subsidies and mandates on individuals and employers. All state residents, above certain income thresholds, would have been required to buy health insurance, but the cost was uncertain. Employers would have been required to contribute toward their workers' health benefits, or pay into a state fund.

Ms. Mulkey said by focusing on coverage expansion, without mechanisms to curb rising costs, California put itself in "that fast lane of health-care spending" increases. It wasn't clear that state funds would have been able to match program costs because health-care costs continue to increase faster than the rest of the economy. Cost management will likely require constraints that only the federal government can impose through the Medicare program because it accounts for such a huge share of overall U.S. health-care spending, she said.

"Some of the potential policies to address costs aren't really available to the states," agreed Dr. Ginsburg. Only the federal government can make changes in the tax treatment of health insurance, for instance. The federal government has the power to change the way it pays physicians. It is also better positioned to evaluate new technologies and drugs to determine whether they add enough value to justify higher costs.

The California bill's critics said its cost-containment mechanisms were weak. Many lawmakers were unconvinced that middle-class families would be able to afford insurance. Some families might be forced to choose between buying food or clothes or paying for this health-care coverage, state Sen. Leland Yee said. "I can't in good conscience put that kind of cloud over any family," he said.
Achieving universal coverage in California might be tougher than nearly anywhere else, said Len Nichols, a New America Foundation health economist who advised Mr. Schwarzenegger. In California, support for a single-payer, government-run health-care system is particularly strong, especially among labor groups. Republican lawmakers in California were adamantly opposed to tax increases, while some Republican lawmakers in Washington are willing to consider options, Mr. Nichols said.

2007 was a busy year for FDA import alerts

The Food and Drug Administration blocked imports of 11 types of questionable foods and drugs in 2007, a significant increase from recent years.

Last year's 11 import alerts effectively ban the affected products from the USA until they're tested and proved safe. In the previous two years combined, the FDA added just six alerts that remain in effect, according to FDA data.

Eleven in one year makes for a "busy year," says Ted Poplawski, FDA import alert official.

About 270 FDA import alerts are in effect. Some are 30 years old.

On rare occasions, the agency adds an import alert and then lifts it shortly thereafter. Those aren't included in the FDA's data.

Three alerts added last year covered products from China: vegetable proteins such as wheat gluten and rice protein concentrate, some toothpaste and five types of farm-raised fish. A less-sweeping alert restricted imports of bottled water from three firms in Armenia after tests showed the presence of high levels of arsenic.

The 11 alerts came in a year marked by the largest pet-food recall — caused by contaminated Chinese ingredients — and multiple discoveries of potentially dangerous products for humans.

The FDA's actions may show it is responding to pressure to improve food safety, says Benjamin England, a former FDA attorney.

"They're starting to focus on imported products more, so they're finding more things," he says.

At least two import alerts in 2007 had substantial impact.

Demand for U.S. wheat gluten, a product used in many foods, including bread, has soared 30% since April when the FDA restricted imports of Chinese vegetable proteins, says Steve Pickman of MGP Ingredients, a domestic producer.

From September through November, inbound-U.S. shipments of Chinese wheat gluten fell to 2.4 million pounds vs. 14.7 million in the same period a year earlier, according to import data from Piers Global Intelligence Solutions.

Shipments of Chinese catfish during the same time dropped 68%, Piers data show. Chinese farm-raised catfish and four other kinds of fish were restricted in June after FDA tests found illegal chemicals.

The alert has led to shipping delays and more testing costs, raising wholesale prices for breaded shrimp by 5%, says Carlos Sanchez of Beaver Street Fisheries in Florida.

Foods not covered by alerts enter the USA with little FDA review. Companies can get off import alerts if they prove to the FDA that their products are consistently good.

No Chinese firms producing or exporting vegetable proteins, including wheat gluten, have done so. One Chinese seafood firm has.

Hayden pays tribute to retiring Adam Gilchrist

ADELAIDE (Reuters) - Matthew Hayden paid a glowing tribute to his Australian team mate Adam Gilchrist after he stunned the cricketing world on Saturday by announcing he was retiring from all forms of the game.

Gilchrist said he was quitting test cricket after the current match against India ends at Adelaide Oval on Monday and then one-day internationals at the end of the forthcoming triangular series against India and Sri Lanka.

Gilchrist has been facing increasing criticism over his performances in the past 12 months but Hayden said the Australian players had no idea he was planning to quit so soon.

"It's massive news and it's surprising news," Hayden told reporters. "Adam informed everyone individually this morning. There was a lot of emotion. He'll be deeply, deeply missed.

"Greatness is something we have aspired to be in the Australian cricket team and he's fulfilled everything that has been asked of him."

Hayden and Gilchrist have been team mates for almost decade. They open the batting together in one-day internationals and stand next to each other in the field with Gilchrist keeping wicket and Hayden at first slip.

Both are regarded among the game's greats and Hayden said Gilchrist would be sorely missed.
"I feel incredibly privileged to have played with Adam for as long as I have. He's held the baggy green in his hand with great pride, great passion, great discipline and a great work ethic," Hayden said.

FLAMBOYANT NATURE

"The flamboyant nature equals the greats of Vivian Richards and some of the other calypso characters that we've seen over the years.

"It's all been such an inspiring and stellar performance over such a long period of time."
"He has played with remarkable skill, he has entertained and done so in a statesmanlike way, bonding cricketers throughout the world and changing cricketers throughout the world with how he has played the game."

Gilchrist has revolutionised test cricket with his explosive lower-order batting, scoring at a career strike rate above 80, but several of his innings stand out.

He helped Australia pull off an incredible win over Pakistan in 1999 with an unbeaten 149 and briefly held the world record for thee fastest double century in tests when he made 204 not out off 212 balls against South Africa in Johannesburg in 2002.

Gilchrist provided at least two other great demonstrations of his extraordinary power with a century off 57 balls in the third Ashes test at Perth in 2006, missing the world record by one run, and a match-winning 149 in last year's World Cup final.

Gilchrist, who is married with three children, is also regarded as one of the fairest players to embrace the game after his unselfish act of voluntarily walking during a World Cup semi-final in 2003.

"I am now ready and excited to move into the next phase of my life," Gilchrist said.
"Thank you to all my team mates and support staff who have given me the most enjoyable, fun career anyone could hope for and to the many officials and opponents I have come across."

Face-off: Is Gates right on creative capitalism?

Practicing what he preaches: Bill Gates joins U2 front man Bono

and PC maven Michael Dell in Davos to pitch Vista-based PCs from
Dell's namesake company. For every one of the computers purchased,
Dell and Microsoft will make a contribution to The Global Fund to help
in the fight against AIDS in Africa. (Credit: Microsoft)
At the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, on Thursday, Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates told the corporate and governmental bigwigs in attendance that businesses should adopt a form of "creative capitalism" in which they seek to alleviate the problems in developing nations.
The notion is essentially this: coming up with drugs or water purification techniques for those nations may not be as profitable as catering to well-heeled retirees in Florida, but rewards will come nonetheless, in the form of recognition and, ultimately, a profit.

"Sometimes market forces fail to make an impact in developing countries not because there's no demand, or even because money is lacking, but because we don't spend enough time studying the needs and requirements of that market," Gates said.

Bah, says CNET News.com's chief political correspondent, Declan McCullagh. Encouraging companies to give to charities, enter smaller markets, or assign top employees to tackle intractable problems in far-flung regions--where those companies may not even have business--conflicts with the duties owed to shareholders. Besides, the shareholders can donate to charities on their own that they might prefer.

Editor at Large Michael Kanellos, meanwhile, says corporations have broader powers. If participating in projects in Africa can help recruit or retain employees, or even open up new markets, it's a good idea.

See "On 'creative capitalism,' Gates gets it."
What do you think?

Cricket: Gilchrist retires from international cricket

ADELAIDE, Australia (AFP) — Record-breaking Australia wicketkeeper Adam Gilchrist unexpectedly announced that he will retire from international cricket, ending a remarkable career.
The popular 36-year-old told his teammates before the third day's play in the fourth Test against India, and his retirement, effective at the end of the upcoming triangular one-day series, was announced at the end of play.
The shock announcement came just 24 hours after Gilchrist claimed the world record for wicketkeeping dismissals in Test cricket. He had then given no indication retirement was imminent, despite having been under the spotlight over dropped catches in the series.
"It is with great pride and happiness that I make the decision to retire from Test and one-day cricket," Gilchrist said in a brief written statement Saturday.
"I've come to this decision after much thought and discussion with those most important to me.
"My family and I have been fortunate to have had an amazing journey full of rich experiences throughout my career and are sincerely grateful to all who have helped make this stage of our lives so fulfilling."
Gilchrist said he was looking forward to spending more time with his wife, Mel, and children Harrison, Annie and Archie.
Booed when he first played for his adopted state of Western Australia after starting his career with New South Wales in 1992-1993, as Perth fans voiced their displeasure at his selection ahead of local favourite Tim Zoehrer, Gilchrist departs the game as one of its greatest ever players after revolutionising the role of wicketkeeper-batsmen.
A veteran of 96 Tests since debuting in 1999 against Pakistan in Brisbane, his 414 dismissals (377 catches, 37 stumpings) is a world record.
He went into his final Test averaging 47.89 with the bat, with 5,556 runs, 17 centuries and a top score of 204 not out.
Gilchrist scored the second-fastest century in Test cricket history (57 balls).
He also captained Australia in six Tests for four wins, including in the historic away series win over India in 2004.
Gilchrist made his one-day international debut in 1996 and has played 277 limited overs internationals, mainly as an opener, for 9297 runs at 36.03 with a strikerate of 96, 15 centuries and a highest score of 172, as well as 454 dismissals.
He played in three World Cup triumphs, including belting an extraordinary 149 from 104 balls in last year's World Cup final.
Speaking on Friday Gilchrist had said he would retire on his own terms and stayed true to that vow.
"I'll let the public and press know when I make a decision, whether that is tomorrow or in 12 months' time," he said.
"It will be my decision. It simply has to come from within.
"All the players have said there has been a time when they have just known and I will let everyone know when that time is."
His retirement continues a changing of the guard in Australian cricket, with Shane Warne, Glenn McGrath, Justin Langer and Damien Martyn all bowing out of international cricket in the last 15 months.
New South Wales wicketkeeper Brad Haddin is expected to take over the gloves for the Australian team.

India push Australia to the wall

It's like leading the king to the gallows. There is this bubbling expectation coming off a rebellion, and there is respect. There also is this uncertainty, that maybe, it isn't over yet.

In the case of an Australian defeat, many experts and critics will be silenced, and Kumble & Co will celebrate.

It would be huge in the context of the game, and big in impact on the series and on cricket journals. All of it, though, through little happenings on-field.

Those little away-shaping deliveries that Irfan Pathan managed this evening to make Australia go two down in their pursuit of 413, those little helpings with the bat from Virender Sehwag, Pathan, MS Dhoni and RP Singh in the absence of big scores, and that little extra urge to excel in pressure situations that VVS Laxman showed.

Australia are 65/2 in their second innings at the end of third day's play, their record-cracking 17th victory a further 348 runs away. India are a little better in the sum total despite the average fare today. Their batsmen had a fat chance of throwing an astronomical figure at Ricky Ponting, but the Aussie captain will come out tomorrow, resuming on 24 in the company of Michael Hussey, batting on 5.

Sehwag started the day in fourth gear, with two stunning square drives off Stuart Clark, racing into his forties. He was lucky to survive on 43 when Hussey dropped him off Brett Lee, but the Delhi opener failed to negotiate further from that score. From the other end Clark cut one back, the ball whizzing past his pads to rattle his stumps.

Almost a norm in this Test, one wicket led to a heap. Rahul Dravid edged to Lee and then Sachin Tendulkar didn't bother to look at the umpire after getting rapped straight on his pads against the same bowler. Sourav Ganguly walked in at number six and left immediately for no score while overnight bat Pathan stood at the other end, looking at the scoreboard moving from 79/2 to 125/5 where just 16 came from the established men. Just when it all smelled of a familiar Indian plot, the climax came with a pleasant twist with Laxman as a superhero. Chastised for his hesitancy to bat along with the tail, Laxman cleared himself of that charge by forging three sizeable partnerships of 35, 75 and 51.

Laxman first joined Pathan before lunch and stopped the carnage. Pathan left off the eighth ball in the second session for a well-complied 46, and Dhoni proved a great ally for the highest partnership of the innings-the Indian deputy in command curbed his natural stroke-making, moving over from a cautious first 5 runs from 43 balls and pulping two sixes against each only when Andrew Symonds and Michael Clarke sent down 16 overs in a row between them.
Dhoni made a sedate but timely 38 but lost his wicket to a cheeky attempt at a sweep.
Laxman reached his half-century from 97 balls with just four boundaries, but each of those was a signature shot. Today he showed more responsibility than elegance, playing a caretaker role, especially in that ninth wicket partnership with RP Singh that lasted 17 overs. He absorbed most of Lee's lethal stuff and allowed RP to wander into Shaun Tait and Clark. RP made 30 with one six and three boundary hits as the lead stretched into 400-plus. Clark and Lee bowled outstandingly to share seven wickets, getting the opposition for under 300.

Then India got what they wanted - two quick wickets as Pathan once again accounted for left-handed openers Chris Rogers and Phil Jaques.

It is a steep climb for Australia now. They will have to beat Don Bradman and The Invincibles. On Australian soil, the home side has a record of 369/6 in the fourth innings while beating Pakistan in Hobart in 1999-2000.

THE BIG CHASE b/n Aus vs Ind

For an unprecedented 17th Test victory in-a-row, the Aussies have to pull off the second-highest run chase in the history.

Aussie target 413

•369- No team has ever chased more than that to win a game on Australian soil (even Don Bradman's The Invincibles didn't have to score more than 404 at Leeds in 1948).
OVER 400

•Only 3 teams (in 1862 Tests), have scored more than that in the fourth innings to win.

• 418: West Indies hold that record (for 7) to beat Australia by three wickets (St John's, 2002-03).

• 404/3: Australia were the first team to win a Test by scoring more than 400-beat England by seven wickets, Leeds, 1948.

Pacer Tait fails to live up to hype

Shaun Tait came into the third Test here against India with the reputation of being the 150+ bowler. He promised to knock the heads off Indian batsman. His skipper Ricky Ponting said he would rattle the opposition with serious pace. But on the field, Tait disappointed. And if what he showed here is what he is capable of, then chance of him wearing the Baggy Green cap again is slim.
Tait the bowler was of little use to his team - he refused to keep the ball up when every other bowler was getting wickets in that manner. He also did not want to see that this was not really the same wicket on which, in a Twenty20 domestic match last December, he bombarded the batsmen with raw pace.
Tait bowled 21 overs in this match to go wicketless. And his ineffectiveness was underscored when, today, VVS Laxman giggled loudly and said that RP Singh, India's number 10 bat, was more comfortable playing Tait than any other Australian bowler.

While Tait failed to live up to the hype, Irfan Pathan has successfully reinforced his status as an all-rounder and as Laxman admitted "was having a great Test match. He's been bowling well, swinging the new ball well from the left-handers and yes, he chipped in with some very crucial runs."

Pathan made it to this tour only because of previous experience and injury to key fast bowlers. He was the third seamer here. There was little expectation from him, given his recent form, but the 23-year Vadodara lad, who bowled at an average of 124kmph and attained a top pace of 127kmph at Canberra, reached 132 kmph today.

Tait is playing in his third Test and have yet to be part of a victorious Test team. In 2005, against England, Australia lost one and drew one with him in the ranks.

Tait, who denied Brad Hogg an opportunity to play in front of his home crowd, may face the same fate next week in Adelaide.

Australia (212) and 142-3 v India (330 and 294) - lunch

PERTH (Reuters) - Australia were 142 for three in their second innings at lunch on the fourth day of the third test against India at the WACA on Saturday.
Scores:
India 330 (Rahul Dravid 93, Sachin Tendulkar 71; Mitchell Johnson 4-86) and 294 (Vangipurappu Laxman 79, Stuart Clark 4-61); Australia 212 (Andrew Symonds 66, Adam Gilchrist 55; Rudra Pratap Singh 4-68) and 142-3

India capture Ponting's wicket on fourth day

PERTH (Reuters) - India captured the vital wicket of Australian captain Ricky Ponting as they pushed for victory on the fourth day of the third test on Saturday.

Fast bowler Ishant Sharma made the breakthrough before lunch when he dismissed Ponting for 45 as Australia crawled their way to finish the morning session on 142 for three.

They needed a further 271 to win the match and take a 3-0 series lead and India required seven more wickets to keep alive their hopes of winning the last two matches and squaring the four-game series.

When lunch was taken on Saturday, Mike Hussey was unbeaten on 39 and Michael Clarke was not out 11. Australia are hoping for a big partnership from them to have any chance of victory.
Australia coach Tim Nielsen said his team were confident of getting the runs because the WACA pitch was holding up so well, although history is heavily stacked against them.

Only one side in 131 years of test cricket have ever scored more runs in the fourth innings to win a test. That was in 2003 when the West Indies made 418-7 to beat Australia in Antigua.
Australia started the fourth day already in a precarious state on 65-2 after losing both their openers on Friday afternoon.

They made a cautious start and Ponting survived a series of loud lbw appeals from Sharma.
He looked to be on his way to a bigger score when his luck finally ran out. The lanky Sharma found the edge and Rahul Dravid took a sharp catch at first slip.

Australia (212) and 243-7 v India (330 and 294) - tea

PERTH (Reuters) - Australia were 243 for seven in their second innings at tea on the fourth day of the third test against India at the WACA on Saturday.
scores:
India 330 (Rahul Dravid 93, Sachin Tendulkar 71; Mitchell Johnson 4-86) and 294 (Vangipurappu Laxman 79, Stuart Clark 4-61); Australia 212 (Andrew Symonds 66, Adam Gilchrist 55; Rudra Pratap Singh 4-68) and 243-7 (Michael Clarke 73 not out)

India victory ends Australia's record hopes

PERTH (Reuters) - India beat Australia by 72 runs in the third test on Saturday, keeping alive their hopes of drawing the four-match series after handing the hosts their first loss since the 2005 Ashes series against England.
India sealed their deserved victory in the final session of the fourth day when they bowled the Australians out for 340 after setting them an unlikely victory target of 413.

Australia won the first two tests but the result means India can now draw the four-match series if they win the final contest starting in Adelaide next week.

Australia had gone into the match as overwhelming favourites to set a new world record of 17 consecutive test wins but crashed to defeat with a day to spare, sparking wild celebrations from India's players and supporters.

The last time the Australians lost any test was in the fourth Ashes match at Trent Bridge in Aug. 2005 and the last time they lost a test at home was against India at Adelaide in Dec. 2003.

India also ended Australia's first 16-match winning streak when they beat them at Calcutta in 2001. Australia equalled that record with their controversial win in Sydney two weeks ago but failed to set a new mark.

The Australians had started the fourth day on 65-2 and clinging to a hope that they could get the required runs on a WACA pitch that was still holding up well after four days baking in the sun.
However, their chances suffered an early blow when captain Ricky Ponting fell for 45 in the morning session, caught by Rahul Dravid at first slip off Ishant Sharma, then the middle-order fell away after lunch.

Mike Hussey went for 46 when he was trapped lbw by Rudra Pratap Singh then Andrew Symonds fell for 12 when New Zealand umpire Billy Bowden adjudged him lbw to spinner Anil Kumble.

INSPIRED DECISION

Kumble produced an inspired piece of captaincy when he threw the ball to India's opening batsman Virender Sehwag, who was recalled to the team for the first time in over a year, and the part-time spinner responded by claiming the next two wickets.

He bowled the dangerous Adam Gilchrist around his legs for 15 then dismissed Brett Lee for duck, caught at silly mid off by Vangipurappu Laxman, to expose Australia's tailenders.

Australia's last recognised batsmen Michael Clarke occupied the crease for almost three hours in making 81 but threw his wicket away when he danced down the pitch to Kumble and was stumped by Mahendra Singh Dhoni.

India's march to victory was stalled by an entertaining ninth wicket stand between Mitchell Johnson and Stuart Clark.

The two paceman decided to chance their arm against the Indians and the tactic paid off as they piled on 73 runs in 55 minutes to get their team within 100 of winning.

Their partnership ended when Clark was caught behind for 32 and India finished off the match when RP Singh bowled Shaun Tait for four, leaving Johnson stranded on 50 not out.

India's victory has provided an extra twist to an already fascinating series that was in danger of being cancelled after the ugly fallout to the Sydney test.

Kumble accused the Australians of breaching the spirit of cricket and the Indian board (BCCI) suspended the tour for two days in protest at the International Cricket Council's (ICC) decision to suspend Harbhajan Singh for racially abusing Symonds.

The BCCI withdrew their threat to quit the tour after Harbhajan was cleared to continue playing until his appeal is heard after the Adelaide test and the ICC agreed to sack West Indian umpire.
The two teams also called a truce to their feud when Ponting and Kumble met face to face to sort out their differences and vow to play the remaining matches in the right spirit.

Resurgent India script a famous win at Perth

DAy 4:

Perth: This is one that the Aussies won't forget in a hurry. Out to seal off the series, and also record their 17th consecutive Test win, they were undone by a charged up India to go down by 72 runs on day four of the third Test at Perth.

The home side, chasing 413 were bowled out for 340. This incidentally, is the first-ever win for any team from the sub-continent at Perth.

Twice now, India have denied Australia the record of 17 straight wins, following up on that sensational victory in Kolkata in 2001.

India scripted this fairytale comeback 'Down Under' with some sensational bowling by their pace trio of Irfan Pathan, R.P. Singh and Ishant Sharma, which was supported well by the batsmen, all the way down the order.

Michael Clarke top scored with an elegant 81 before Anil Kumble foxed him to take India on the brink of a super win. But the Indians had to wait to attain the victory as the Aussie tail launched a counter-attack.

Mitchell Johnson and Stuart Clark came out with all guns blazing to share a belligerent 73-run stand. The duo gave the fielding side a scare with some lusty hits. The partnership was finally broken by Man of the Match Irfan Pathan when the left-arm seamer dismissed Clark for 32.
RP Singh dealt the final blow, cleaning up number eleven Shaun Tait for four to take India to their first ever Test win at Perth and the fifth in Australia.

Earlier, the visitors had done most of the damage in the post-lunch session as Australia lost four key wickets.

Michael Hussey, who came up with a gritty knock, was the first Aussie to fall in the post-lunch session for 46. RP Singh grabbed his first wicket in the Australian second essay when he trapped Hussey leg before.

Fortune did not favour India's nemesis Andrew Symonds like it did in Sydney as the Queenslander fell to a dubious decision off Anil Kumble. Replays showed the ball clearly ricochet off the bat on to the pad but umpire Asad Rauf thought otherwise as he raised the dreaded finger to send Symonds back for 12.

The dangerous Adam Gilchrist took the attack to India during his brief stint in the middle before an inspired bowling change by Kumble in the form of Virender Sehwag upset the Aussie plans. Sehwag bowled the southpaw around his legs to the delight of the Indian team.

But the Delhi bowler was not done yet. In his very next next over, Sehwag had Brett Lee caught off bat and pad at silly point by VVS Laxman to send the Aussie innings tottering at 229-7.

Ricky Ponting, was the only wicket to fall in the morning session after the Aussie skipper, along with Hussey, had safely negotiated the first hour of play to add 74 runs for the third wicket. But just after the first hour, rookie pacer Ishant Sharma struck as he got India their first breakthrough of the day.

Sharma, for the second time in the match, claimed the Australian captain, five short of a half-century.

Bird flu confirmed in West Bengal

West Bengal government has confirmed a highly pathogenic strain of bird flu in Birbhum and South Dinajpur districts of the state.

Authorities are now waiting for a nod from the Centre to begin culling of around 3.5 lakh birds.

According to the agriculture ministry, around 100 villages in Birbhum and a poultry farm in South Dinajpur districts have been affected with the H5N1 strain of the virus.

The authorities in the state were standing by, since Monday in anticipation of the official confirmation of an outbreak.

This followed overnight reports that close to 18,000 birds had died in the area on Monday in addition to 10,000 chickens that have died in the past 11 daysCulling will be carried out within a five km radius of the affected area and the owners will be compensated with Rs 40 per bird.

The health ministry is presently holding a crucial meeting in Nirman Bhawan, New Delhi in order to decide on the future course of events.Meanwhile, South Dinajpur and Murshidabad districts have been put on alert as panic has set in amongst the residents.

60 rapid response teams are in the area, replete with masks and tamiflu tablets, the only drug available to treat bird flu.

Ponting happier after Kumble meeting

Australia captain Ricky Ponting said he was glad to have held clear-the-air talks with India's Anil Kumble after coming under intense pressure following the infamous Sydney Test.
Ponting, who faced calls to step down after the explosive events of Sydney, promised "appropriate" behaviour in the third Test starting here on Wednesday with both teams in the spotlight.
"I am really happy that Anil and I were able to sit down as two grown men and have a good chat about the whole thing," he said. "I felt a lot happier after that meeting and I am sure Anil did too. "Both he and I have been under a lot of pressure this week and to get that meeting out of the way has been really good for both us and for the game."
Ponting and Kumble met on Monday to defuse tensions between the teams after charges of racism and poor sportsmanship marred a gripping finale in the second Test of the series. India dropped abusive language charges against spinner Brad Hogg in an apparent peace offering after the talks, brokered by International Cricket Council (ICC) chief match referee Ranjan Madugalle.
Ponting said it was vital that both teams keep their emotions in check at the WACA ground, where Australia are chasing a record 17th consecutive Test win. "It is important now that our actions are carried out in the appropriate manner in the next five days," he said. "It is not about what has happened, it is about future actions and we are keen to make sure our future actions are as good as they can be on the field."
The two captains also agreed to scrap a contentious pre-series agreement for batsmen to accept fielders' word on catches after it backfired spectacularly in Sydney. Man-of-the-match Andrew Symonds earned India's wrath when he admitted knowing he was caught on 30 in the first innings before making 137 not out.
"It's been scrapped, as of yesterday," Ponting said. "That wasn't the way I wanted to play. I wanted to continue the way it was but the feeling through the Indian team was that they would like it to go back and be in the hands of the umpire." Australia will be without injured opener Matthew Hayden, who has a hamstring strain, ending a run of 86 consecutive Tests for the veteran batsman.
"I couldn't look the skipper in the eye and say that I was going to be fully fit," said Hayden, who will be replaced by uncapped West Australian Chris Rogers. Hogg also makes way for Shaun Tait as Australia go for four fast bowlers on the fast and bouncy WACA wicket.
"Taity will be used in short spells to really unsettle the batsmen," Ponting said. "As we have seen through his career, he is a wicket-taking machine. It's very rare that he goes a game or an innings without taking two or three wickets." India meanwhile looked set to drop Harbhajan Singh in favour of Irfan Pathan for the same reason, despite a postponement to the off-spinner's appeal against his racism ban until after the series, meaning he is available to play. Harbhajan received a three-Test suspension for allegedly calling Symonds a "monkey," a claim India strenuously deny.
The appeal will not be heard until after the fourth Test, the ICC said late on Monday. Aggressive opener Virender Sehwag was also set to be recalled at the expense of Yuvraj Singh.
The 52-Test veteran will return at the top of the order with Rahul Dravid, who has struggled as an opener in the first two Tests, dropping to number three. "To have the quality of Rahul at three, it will again shift the batting order a bit," Kumble said.
Likely teams:
Australia - Ricky Ponting (c), Chris Rogers, Phil Jaques, Andrew Symonds, Mike Hussey, Michael Clarke, Adam Gilchrist, Brett Lee, Stuart Clark, Mitchell Johnson, Shaun Tait, Brad Hogg (12th man).
India - Anil Kumble (c), Virender Sehwag, Wasim Jaffer, Sourav Ganguly, V.V.S. Laxman, Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar, Mahendra Singh Dhoni, R.P. Singh, Ishant Sharma, Irfan Pathan, Dinesh Karthik (12th man).

HALLA BOL : MOVIE REVIEW

No matter how well intentioned Halla Bol is, the film, at the end of the day, fails to stir you up.
Rajkumar Santoshi is back with another film that raises pertinent questions and tries to prick your conscience through a story that has a Santoshi stamp all over it. At the centre of the story is a protagonist who dares to raise his voice against injustice and, in doing so, makes himself the target of powerful people (a corrupt politician and a liquor baron) whose sons are the perpetrators of the crime.
What mars ‘Halla Bol’ is Santoshi’s unsubtle and stale treatment of the subject. Even though the director raises a new issue in this film, he gives it the same garb as we have seen in his films like ‘Damini’ and ‘Ghayal’.Among the villains we have a corrupt politician who twists the system to his convenience in full connivance with the police force.
And then there are those seen-a-hundred-times sequences of the protagonist’s family being threatened, his car being run-over by a truck at night, his house being attacked by hooligans and many such obvious clichés of Santoshi’s past films. In a nutshell, ‘Halla Bol’ offers nothing fresh, even though it deals with an entirely new and much relevant subject. You will see what I mean when you get an overview of the story.
Sameer Khan ( Ajay Devgan ) is a film star corrupted by stardom. He feels no pangs of conscience in sleeping with girls willing to be couched for a Bollywood break. A disloyal husband and a selfish actor, Sameer gets his rude awakening when he witnesses the murder of a girl at a party.Even as the killers walk out of the party with their heads held high, Sameer, like other celebrities, prefers to turn a blind eye to the murder. But there is something good in Sameer that provokes him to do soul searching. That good comes from his past.Superstar Sameer Khan once used to be a small town theatre artist called Ashfaque.
Along with his guruji Siddhu ( Pankaj Kapur ) he used to perform street plays dealing with social issues. Ashfaque was a simple but ambitious man whose passion for acting just about surpassed his love for Sneha ( Vidya Balan ), whom he eventually marries. However, with his first big Bollywood break, Ashfaque becomes Sameer Khan. Fame changes not just his name, his character too. Stardom goes to his head. And his selfish ambition alienates him from his wife, his guru and his parents.Sameer lives his lonely, depraved and debauched life until his conscience wakens after witnessing the murder at party. He decides not to be a mute spectator to injustice. He decides to testify as a witness and bring the culprits, however powerful they be, to justice. What follows reminds you Santoshi’s past films.
A sweet-talking corrupt politician (whose son is one of the accused) threatens Sameer with dire consequences if he does not retract from his statement. When cajoling and coercion fail, the politician has his goons terrorize Sameer’s family. Sameer is ditched by his peers in the film industry. His effigies are burnt by public. And just when it seems to be becoming one man’s fight against the whole system, enters Siddhu, Sameer’s guru and a reformed dacoit.Gradually, Sameer’s fight becomes the fight of avam.
The public’s conscience is awakened and the good emerges triumphant over the evil in the end.More than the impact of the story, you carry home with you superb performances by Pankaj Kapur, Darshan Jariwala and Ajay Devgan. Kapur’s portrayal of Sidhu is so powerful that you cringe in your seat when he stares fixatedly at the camera. Darshan Jariwala plays the sweet-talking corrupt politician with such conviction that you love to hate his character. Ajay Devgan brings a natural seriousness to his role. It is one of those roles that suit Devgan’s natural flair. Vidya Balan is mostly reduced to the margins, but she does get a few meaty scenes.
Rajkumar Santoshi’s intentions are noble indeed. But he keeps falling back on his old style of filmmaking in which a corrupt system goes to dangerous extents to muffle a rare call for truth and justice. ‘Halla Bol’ also exposes the hypocrisy of the elite and takes indirect potshots at Bollywood stars who know little else than to dance at marriages and endorse brands.
The film required a hard-hitting end, but the writers contrived the screenplay to suit their convenience. As a result, what should have been a riveting, evocative and enlightening end turns out to be a hurried and unconvincing conclusion to the story.

Noted cosmetic surgeon accused of molestation

Prominent cosmetic surgeon Vijay Sharma(47) was arrested yesterday by the Khar police for allegedly molesting 20 year old Mansi Singh (name changed), a female journalist from a news channel. The incident took place early Saturday morning when the journalist had gone to Dr Sharma’s clinic for an interview.
Dr Sharma, accused of
molestation by a journalist
Dr Sharma launched his website that was inaugurated by Bollywood actress Priyanka Chopra on Friday.
According to Mansi’s lawyer Falguni Brahmbhatt, “When the interview was over, Mansi waited to thank him. On the pretext of shaking her hand, Dr Sharma pulled her close to him, tried to kiss her and started to feel her. When Mansi resisted, he took a sharp, surgical instrument and threatened to kill her and told her that he can spoil her life with his money and muscle power.”
Mansi went to Khar police station and registered a molestation case against Dr Sharma. The Khar police arrested Dr Sharma and will be producing him in front of the Bandra court.
Veronica Sharma (22), daughter of Dr Vijay Sharma said, “My father is wrongly framed by the channel for publicity. There was a camera crew with the journalist. Why didn’t anyone come to help her?”

Bollywood tales of stardom and the big bad world Cinema

Starry stories: This week Bollywood lovers can choose between “Halla Bol”
and “My Name is Anthony Gonsalves”.

HALLA BOL

(At Liberty and other theatres in Delhi and elsewhere)

Faith is a wonderful companion. It helps Rajkumar Santoshi leap across to safety with “Halla Bol”, a film that could have easily been reduced to an art-house show meant for multiplex audiences only. Alternately, it could have degenerated into a rabble-rouser. People would have whistled at every other dialogue, there would have been a sizzling item number thrown in for good measure too. That Santoshi embraces neither, walking the tightrope all along, is a tribut e to the man who believes films are a medium for entertainment. But that entertainment has to be accompanied by a lesson or two.

Often in his movies there is more than a gentle nudge about a society that has its anomalies. Films like “Damini”, “Ghayal”, “Lajja” and “Pukar” come to mind. Here now in “Halla Bol” Santoshi borrows handsomely from “Damini”, a film that moved many with its poignant tale of a rape victim. Here in “Halla Bol” too the protagonist is a witness to a rape and murder. Yet Santoshi is not so much as opening a page from a book read in the past as he is adding a new volume to the series.

Here his hero, Ajay Devgan is a Bollywood superstar, given to the heady ways of the blessed. With intoxicating success, the days of struggle when he used to learn at the feet of his guru – Pankaj Kapur as a theatre sage who was once a sinner – are but a faded memory. It all changes as the hero’s conscience is merely asleep, not dead. As he decides to cooperate with the cops as a witness to the murder, his life changes forever. Throw in the stardom angle, the producers shying away from a man whose films won’t be easily released – shades of real life there? – and political outfits ready to fish in troubled waters, and you have a film that has enough substance to last a couple of hours.

That the film does, keeping the viewer engaged in the proceedings. Occasionally, it lags, needing some crisp editing in parts of the second half. It all ends a bit hastily.

Will save you the end, though. However, do remember that this film is meant to be consumed by the first weekend crowd who like their cinema light but care for a message. With some deliberately loud dialogue and melodrama, it fulfils their needs though it leaves the discerning viewer a shade disappointed. The pathos of “Damini” is not there, nor the tight grip of “Ghayal”. Also mercifully missing is the sermon of “Lajja”. Devgan, as one said, is good without being outstanding while Vidya Balan as his wife does her best not to distract you from the proceedings, leaving the field all clear for Pankaj Kapur to score with his seasoned craft.

A word about Darshan Jariwala who plays a wily politician whose son in involved in the crime. He is understated, and proves that his much talked about performance in “Gandhi, My Father” was no flash in the pan. So, look at your glass. Half full or half empty? Santoshi the activist filmmaker knows where his heart is. Importantly, he keeps his head and comes up with a film that has some masala for the box office. And some food for thought for those who talk films with passion and watch with discretion. MY NAME IS ANTHONY GONSALVES
(M2K, Rohini, and other theatres)

At a time when Bollywood is increasingly wearing the colours of uniformity, this has turned out to be a rare week. If Ashfaque – not to be confused with the unsung freedom fighter – is the hero of Rajkumar Santoshi’s “Halla Bol”, it is Anthony Gonsalves here in the title role in E. Niwas’s film. However, the change is mere cosmetic. Sandpaper away the names of the two heroes. Ignore the Haji Ali song in “Halla Bol” and a few church sequences here, and you realise our dream merchants only skim the surface. There is not even a pretence to sense the different psyches of two minority protagonists beyond mere symbolism.

Result? A film that flatters to deceive. However, why expect something better from a film whose title itself is inspired from a late 1970s’ song in Manmohan Desai’s “Amar Akbar Anthony”? Originality has seldom been Bollywood’s forte, so excuse Niwas too. But what one cannot digest is the complete inability of the director to get the viewers hooked on to the film which starts off as a love story of a struggling actor and an upcoming assistant director. A little into the film, a couple of songs out of the way, and suddenly the film turns an underworld saga.
The hero, you see, is an orphan who has been reared by a baddie who is now wanted by the cops!

As Niwas goes about solving the riddle, the film changes tracks, and as he remembers to bring the love angle back, you long for the exit. Why? Not only does the story move in fits and starts, newcomer Nikhil Dwivedi has as much charisma as a fly on the wall. His dialogue delivery barely passes muster, and as Niwas seeks to build up his persona, you realise the debutant needed more help.
His co-star Amrita Rao, in comparison, is at ease in front of the camera. Pity Nikhil also has to share the screen with seasoned pros like Mithun Chakraborty, Anupam Kher and Pawan Malhotra. Each of these artistes does his bit to perfection though Mithun is a bit wasted as a clergyman who seldom steps beyond the church and hardly ever interacts with any other soul except the hero!

The film could have done with better music, a more amiable hero, and Niwas in his “Shool” form. Alas!

Still want to go to watch this film? Well, all one would say is, “Aaj jaane ki zid na karo”, a Farida Khanum ghazal Anupam Kher so lovingly quotes in the film. NATIONAL TREASURE: BOOK OF SECRETS
(At Satyam, Nehru Place, and other theatres)
Hollywood continues to revel in stereotypes. Basking in the glory of superstars’ charisma, the directors have seldom made an effort to go beyond the tried and the tested. So sequels have often been preferred. “National Treasure:2” is yet another addition to the series.
Trying to capitalise on the undoubted fan following of Nicolas Cage, not to forget Helen ‘Queen’ Mirren, the film offers a brief spell of sustained action. In between there is a prolonged dry spell when the viewers wonder if the director has a trick they have not seen earlier.

That is not to be. Here the story unfolds on predictable lines with the hunt for a buried treasure that leaves Cage too much of a burden to carry. He plays a treasure hunter who stumbles upon a missing page of a diary that incriminates one of his ancestors for the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln. The search has wider repercussions all right but the film does not quite go the distance.

Watch “National Treasure:2” if you have forgotten the first. Otherwise, it just spoils the memory.

Go online to get the big Bollywood break

A new website gives an opportunity to would-be film-makers in India to compete for funds to make their dream films

After reality TV talent contests for aspiring singers, there’s something like an ‘Indian Idol’ for would-be film-makers –– except that it’s on the web.

Kushal Srivastava, a 28-year-old Mumbaikar who wants to make films for a living, is among numerous aspirants, both novice and experienced, who are in the race.

To begin with, they submit three-minute clips on a theme of the month –– the current one being ‘Lost & Found’ –– to a website called Filmaka (www.filmaka.in). A jury of film personalities, including Farhan Akhtar, Shabana Azmi, Ashutosh Gowariker, Naseeruddin Shah, Rahul Bose, Anupam Kher, Vishal Bharadwaj, Anil Kapoor, Uday Singh and Santosh Sivan will short-list the best entries.

The winners get cash prizes as well as funds to make short films on given topics. These in turn will be periodically reviewed to pick a grand winner who will be funded to make a full-length feature film.

It’s a long shot to get past all the contenders, but then what are your chances of getting Bollywood to finance your film?

Srivastava, whose entry was short-listed, says it’s worth his time even if he doesn’t get the prize: “Firstly, it gives us a platform to showcase our talent which no film-making course can offer us. The fact that we get paid to make the films is the icing on the cake.”

Filmaka.in is the Indian version of a worldwide site called www.filmaka.com which has the backing of Hollywood heavyweights like Colin Firth, Christopher Sharp and Kurt Woolner.

Filmaka is the brainchild of Deepak Nayar, producer of Bend It Like Beckham. The idea came to him after he was inundated by scripts from aspiring filmmakers. “It is not possible for me to read all the scripts physically. So, I thought of allowing people to pitch their ideas by showing them in a visual medium rather than on pieces of paper,” he told DNA in an interview.
He says the online competition aims to find new talent and give them the tools to make the “next big thing”, and the idea has found some support in the Hindi film industry. Anurag Basu (director of Murder), recalls the days when aspiring filmmakers got little or no help: “When I was trying to establish myself in the industry in 1994, I knew I was talented, but had no way to showcase my talent.”

But there are also sceptics who question the efficacy of such online platforms. Aditya Nimbalkar, an executive of the production house Red Ice, says: “The chances of making a feature film or an ad by winning some competition online are minimal. If a Farhan Akhtar or Nagesh Kukunoor likes my entry and work, they will at the most take me up as an assistant.”

But young aspirants are not dissuaded by such doubts. Purva Naresh, who has made it to the final round of the international Filmaka contest, says, “After Filmaka happened to me, Deepak Nayar asked me to do a ten-part series for him. A London-based ad agency contacted me directly after seeing my work to do commercial film for a bank in India.”

Basu feels the web will feed a growing demand for new talent. “Bollywood is getting industrialised, and corporates want freelance directors to run the show. This is a golden opportunity for these aspiring filmmakers.”

India move up to 2nd in ICC Test rankings

Successive losses to Australia notwithstanding, India have moved up to second in the latest ICC Test Championship table announced on Sunday.

India are 0-2 down in the ongoing four-match series against Ricky Ponting's side but made the leap after South Africa conceded a match to West Indies in their 2-1 series win on Saturday.
India are level on points with third-placed Sri Lanka but are ahead of Mahela Jayawardane's team when the points are calculated beyond the decimal point.

South Africa has slipped two places to fourth in the table. The Proteas went into the series against West Indies in second position knowing that they needed to win it at least 2-0 in order to maintain that lead.

Having lost the first Test in Port Elizabeth, Graeme Smith's men did well to win the series with victories at Cape Town and Durban. But such is the weighting system when playing teams further down the table that it means that the South Africans lost one ratings point in the latest table.

Given how tight it was with just two ratings points separating South Africa in second place and England in fifth, that single point has made a big difference to the table.

Australia is still way out in front of the rest on 143 ratings points, some 34 clear of its nearest rival. The ICC Test Championship table: 1. Australia (143), 2.India (109), 3.Sri Lanka (109), 4.South Africa (108), 5.England (107), 6.Pakistan (94), 7.New Zealand (91), 8.West Indies (73), 9.Bangladesh (4).

Too much sugar-free gum linked to bowel problems

LONDON (Reuters) - Consuming too much sorbitol, a sweetener widely used in "sugar-free" chewing gum and sweets, can cause serious bowel problems, German doctors said on Friday.
The warning follows the cases of two patients who suffered chronic diarrhea, abdominal pain and severe weight loss after ingesting large amounts of sorbitol.

Writing in the British Medical Journal, the doctors from Berlin said the patients -- a man and a woman -- had consumed some 15 to 20 sticks of chewing gum a day. When they kicked the habit, both regained normal bowel function.

Sorbitol, also known as E420, is poorly absorbed by the small intestine and is known to have laxative properties. But Dr Juergen Bauditz and colleagues of the University of Berlin said many consumers might fail to link it with their gastrointestinal problems.

"Our cases demonstrate that sorbitol consumption can cause not only chronic diarrhea and functional bowel complaints but also considerable unintended weight loss -- about 20 percent of usual body weight," they wrote.

Dus.Kahaniyaan.PDVDRIP

====----Plot Outline----====

Quote:"Dus Kahaniyaan" comes from the stable of Sanjay Gupta's production house-WHITE FEATHER FILMS. In the past they have come out with "Musafir", "Kaante", "Zinda" & "Shootout At Lokhandwala". Two things that one can be certain of in the movies from this production house are Sanjay Dutt and lots and lots of style! In "Dus Kahaniyaan" you find both, but in parts! "Dus Kahaniyaan" can be described best as like a book of short stories covering different genres or spectrum. It has , like the title says, 10 stories. Each one of them is a separate story and therefore what makes this movie different from the likes of "Darna Mana Hai" etc. is that the stories are not connected by any common thread! Each story exists in a different world, completely independent of each other just like the different stories in a book.

Now, coming to the important part-are the stories good enough to grip you? Well, personally I feel that there are at least 4 stories that are a notch above the other 6. That's my personal opinion though some viewers might take a liking to a few of the other stories as well. The best of the lot are (not necessarily in that order): MATRIMONY-Features Mandira Bedi, Arbaaz Khan and Sudhanshu Pandey. It's about marriage and infidelity. Good acting from all three and the twist in the tale is awesome-my favourite of the ten stories! RICE PLATE-Shabana Azmi and Naseruddin Shah. You expect the best from them and are not disappointed. The story is about religious belief's-two contrasting views! A subtext of communal harmony.

ZAHIR-Another story with a twist! Features Manoj Bajpai and Dia Mirza. Good narration though acting was just about passable! It's about a writer (Manoj Bajpai) who has failed in love but see a ray of hope (yet again) in Dia Mirza. But is She ready? Has an underlying social message too! POORNAMASI-A tale of honour. Revolves around a mother-daughter played by Amrita Singh and Minnisha Lamba respectively. A decent story (that's the least you can expect from it's writer-Meghna Gulzar).

The other 6 stories that I haven't mentioned didn't really grip me! There's SEX ON THE BEACH (Dino Moreo, Tareena Patel) that has some good visuals, sound effects and tilts towards the spooks but just doesn't do it. GOOBARE (Nana Patekar, Rohit Roy, Hansika Mansandani) is predictable and so is the one that has Aftab Shivdasani and Neha Uberoi! RISE AND FALL involving Sanjay Dutt and Suniel Shetty is confusing (due to the way it's narrated) and is only high on style. STRANGERS IN THE NIGHT (Neha Dhupia, Mahesh Manjrekar) is below average too. And the weakest is HIGH ON THE HIGHWAY (Jimmy Shergill).
